A CHALLENGING AND TURBULENT SEA FOR EXTREME POWER SURFING

Enzo Cavallini posted a 9.60 wave, the highest score so far
Today the women entered the water with the first eight heats of this QS 4000

Pantín, Valdoviño, August 28 – Another endless display of waves marked the sixth day of the 38th edition of the ABANCA Pantín Classic Galicia Pro 2025. If the opening days of the Para Surf League (August 23–24) and the Galician Championship (August 25) were dominated by the sun, during the World Surf League competition these days it is the ocean, in all caps, that rules.

Since Tuesday the 26th, the Atlantic has been putting on a spectacular show of power, size, and consistency. One after another, towering walls of water crash down on the right-hand corner of Ariño Beach, with barrels and faces of 3 to 4 meters, offering world-class action at this QS 4000 event of the World Surf League (WSL), which runs through Sunday the 31st.

Five days of international competition have brought nearly 200 of the best surfers on the European Tour of the WSL to Galicia, where this contest has been held since 1988. If yesterday the men reached Round 64, today it was the women’s turn, starting with Round 48. Advancing to Round 32 were: Tiara Van Der Hul, Belle Betteridge, Juliette Lacome, Lisa Boos, Lilias Tebbai, Saioa Ortega, Gabriela Dinis, Camila Cardoso, Rachel Presti, Naïa Monte, Janina Zeitler, Constância Simões, Maria Salgado, Adriana Fernández Hidalgo, Anaïs Blanchard, and Maelys Jouault.

In the men’s side, 12 heats of 30 minutes each, with four surfers per heat, showcased highly demanding surfing on every level. Even experienced riders found it extremely difficult to paddle back out through the powerful waves. French surfer Leo Paul Etienne even chose to climb the hillside and paddle out from the rocks in a risky but applauded maneuver—only to be eliminated shortly afterward.
Those advancing from Round 64 to Round 32 included: Yago Dominguez, Julien Fontvielle, Thomas Debierre, Luan Nogues, Sean Gunning, João Mendonça, Leonardo Apreda, Sam Pitter, Stanley Norman, Hans Odriozola, Guilherme Ribeiro, Ruben Vitoria, and Enzo Cavallini, who signed off the afternoon’s best performance with a 9.60 wave, the highest score so far. Still in the running are Keoni Lasa, Charly Quivront, and Paul Boniface.

PANTÍN SOUND: LA INDIRIGIBLE, PUCHEROS ATÓMICOS & BLACK COFFEE

This Friday brings another triple serving of live music at Pantín Sound, on the ABANCA Pantín Classic Galicia Pro grounds, with sunset performances for every taste. First up, at 7:00 p.m., La Indirigible, a local indie band from the region, returning after their appearance at the Gadis Surf Festival Ferrol 2024.

They’ll be followed on the main stage by Os Pucheros Atómicos DJs, with Black Coffee closing the night at the ABANCA stand.

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION: BEACH CLEANUP
Finally, a reminder that this Friday the 29th at 5:00 p.m. there will be a beach cleanup at Pantín, organized together with the Espazos Corresponsables program of Social Policy. This free resource for families and workers runs throughout the competition, providing activities for children aged 4 to 16.

Want to join? Simply come to the Corresponsables tent at the entrance of the venue, ready to lend a hand. Children and adults alike are welcome, and gloves and trash bags will be provided.

This is one of the environmental initiatives promoted throughout the nine days of international competition, part of a firm commitment to sustainability and respect for the natural environment—an effort that also includes encouraging waste separation through the recycling islands, with the support of the Regional Ministry of Environment.
