ABANCA PANTÍN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO: 35 UNINTERRUPTED YEARS OF THE TOP SURFING EVENT IN EUROPE

  • The Portuguese Teresa Bonvalot and the Basque Adur Amatriain, reign as champions.
  • Galicia is a leader in sport, leisure, tourism, and inclusion.

Pantín beach has hosted the most anticipated event of the summer, the 35th anniversary of the ABANCA PANTÍN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO 2022, which brought together athletes and visitors from all over the world on the Galician coast.

For more than a week Pantín became the epicenter of leisure and international sport, starting with the celebration of the third edition of the ABANCA ADAPTIVE SURF. This year more than 30 surfers from all over the world attended the event. Big names such as Aitor “Gallo” Francesena (Basque Country), Danna Cummings (USA), Sarah Almagro (Spain), Victoria Feige (Canada), Nicolás Gallegoso (Argentina), and Marta Jordao (Portugal).

Showing that they are a great example of resilience and self-improvement, these athletes pointed out that in Pantín they have found an inclusive beach, perfect for the practice of their sport.

Then it was the turn of the 35th edition of the World Surf League (WSL) event, the ABANCA PANTÍN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO 2022, which gathered some 150 surfers, both national and international, on the Galician coast.

The Portuguese Teresa Bonvalot and the Basque Adur Amatriain bested the rest of the competitors and were crowned champions of this 35th anniversary. This was definitely a very special victory for both athletes who had already won the event before.

The Portuguese surfer won the title in 2020, her first victory in an international event, so “Pantín will always be an extraordinary place for me,” she said. For his part, the Basque surfer was proclaimed champion in the last edition, in 2021, and this year he returned to Pantín ready to defend his title. Standing out from his first heat, he advanced unstoppable in the competition until he took the victory once again.

But Teresa Bonvalot and Adur Amatriain not only win the title of champions, but they will also be part of the Estrella Galicia Forest of Champions once again. Through this initiative, a native tree is chosen to be planted in the vicinity of the event to symbolize the champions’ victory.

They were joined by athletes of the standing of Joan Durú (France), Yolanda Hopkins (Portugal), Alys Barton (Great Britain), Kai Odriozola (Spain), Melania Suárez (Canary Islands), Kauli and Aelan Vaast (Tahiti), Tiago Carrique (France), Luis Díaz (Canary Islands), Pauline Ado (France), Rachel Presti (Germany) and Lucía Machado (Canary Islands).

But this 35th anniversary was much more than surfing. During the days of the competition, a wide variety of innovative parallel activities took place at the event venue.

From a free playroom, an initiative of the Xunta de Galicia, through the Plan Corresponsables of the Consellería de Promoción de Emprego e Igualdade, acting as a promoter of family reconciliation for attendees, event workers, and athletes themselves; workshops and lectures by Vithas; a showroom by Dyson; to a variety of food trucks in the entertainment area and various musical performances.

The ABANCA PANTÍN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO 2022 completes its anniversary by celebrating 35 uninterrupted years of the best surfing and leisure at Pantín Beach, the longest-running sporting event in Europe.
