Antipodes connection: from Tahiti to Razo to surf for the European crown

September 24, Razo (A Coruña).- The geographical antipodes of Galicia are in New Zealand. Still further away, French Polynesia and Tahiti. More than 15,000 kilometers separate Razo beach from this Pacific archipelago. A distance that Aelan Vaast and his family have traveled to participate this week in the Cabreiroá Junior Pro Razo- Caión 2023 in the Atlantic waters in search of the crown of the queen and king of Europe of surfing in the under- 21 category.

This Sunday the 24th, with the sun breaking through and great waves, the last day of the championship began at 8:00 a.m., the only stop of the World Surf League (WSL) in Spain and the last of the European circuit this season with the semifinals in male and female category.

Among the 150 young participants (95 boys and 39 girls) of 11 nationalities, a young surfer born in Tahiti draws attention: Aelan Vaast, who won the Cabreirorá Junior Pro held in 2022 in Doniños.

The Vaast are an atypical family with floating roots in French Polynesia. The parents, Natou and Gael, met at a windsurfing competition and surfing genes run through their blood. His three children -Kauli, Naiki and Aealn- are three great little surfers who have amazed the world circuit with their precocity and talent. The younger sister Aelan (flower, in Hawaiian) is known as the mermaid of Vairao and was playing in the semifinals this Sunday.

It is the first time that the WSL championship in Spain is held in A Costa da Morte and lands in Razo with a vocation to permanence with the promotion of the Provincial Council of A Coruña and the Tourism Agency of Galicia, within its strategy to make the region’s first World Surfing Reserve along with other sandy areas in the area.

The Cabreiroá Junior Pro Razo-Caion event, where nearly 200 kids from 11 countries meet with their families, is also the best tourist showcase for Galicia, which is broadcast live to the whole world through https://www. worldsurfleague.com/events/2023/jun/183/cabreiro-junior-pro-razo-cain/main
