Father and son race for victory in Cabreiroá Pro Las Américas 2020

Dani and Néstor García, Cantabrian surfers as well as father and son, came to the beach of Las Américas, Arona to compete in the Cabreiroá Pro Las Américas 2020, the first stop in Spain of the European Tour of the World Surf League (WSL).

Both surfers began their stay in Arona participating in the national championship belonging to the Canarian Surf circuit, which was held on February 1 and 2, during the weekend before Cabreiroá Pro Las Américas 2020. Dani was eliminated in the third round, but Nestor reached the final obtaining the second place and one of the Wildcards that were disputed, which granted him access to the international championship.

The conditions during the weekend required a good reading of the sea, a crucial aspect to continue advancing heats. From a coach’s point of view, Dani commented that Nestor stood out for his good choice of waves. As a father, Dani highlighted how proud he is for his son’s victory.

Cabreiroá Pro Las Américas is not the first event in which they compete against each other. They commented that, despite having been rivals in other championships and having sometimes won Dani and other Nestor, they still enjoy competing together, since they maintain a very healthy range of competitiveness. What has been a first for both is to surf in the conditions that have been so far in the Cabreiroá Pro Las Américas 2020, which fired up with an epic part, something unusual in this type of competitions. Dani, who qualified for the event, had the opportunity to enjoy these waves, with Nestor cheering him from the beach wishing to be in the water with his father.

Dani, who has been competing for more than 30 years, said that this is not his first time competing in Las Américas, as it is for Nestor. Actually, Dani told that the same year his son Néstor was born, he was here competing in a QS (Qualifying Series), like the one happening now, and that, the following year the whole family returned to Tenerife to encourage him up while racing in another event. Years later, father and son share sea while participating in the same championship.

Tenerife is one of the favourite destinations of both surfers, the contrast between the sea and the mountains, the favourable waves and of course, its people, make Tenerife the perfect destination for any surfer. A destination that, they commented, reminds them of their house in Cantabria, being similar wave conditions, although they are enjoying the chance of surfing in a warmer sea at this time of year, which, they added, allows them to discover new facets of surfing.

It only remains to know if they will get what they want so much, a family final where father and son would face each other to get the long-awaited victory. That, without a doubt, would be an epic way to end the Cabreiroá Pro Las Américas 2020.
