GIANT WAVES IN A MEMORABLE START TO THE 38TH ABANCA PANTÍN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO

The immensity of the ocean led WSL judges to postpone competition until tomorrow

Pantín, Valdoviño, August 26 – It will be a memorable start to the 2025 international competition, thanks to the power of the sea this morning. Giant four-meter waves with long periods appeared from early on at the opening of the ABANCA Pantín Classic Galicia Pro, with sizes not seen in more than a decade.

The international competition in Pantín, where some of the best surfers from the WSL European tour are gathered these days, began this morning with the first men’s heats under the rain. However, as the morning went on, the sun broke through and the venue once again filled with spectators.

The heavy ocean conditions forced WSL (World Surf League) officials to halt the championship in the morning. Competition resumed at 3:30 p.m. but was ultimately postponed until tomorrow, as the waves made paddling back out extremely difficult, with true walls of water crashing down endlessly and even hindering the visibility of the competitors.

Half a dozen heats were completed, with Marco Marin, Axel Lopetegui, Tomasso Pavoni, Peru Zuniga, and Guillerme Fonseca advancing to the next rounds. In the coming days, with a better forecast, the competition will continue toward the final rounds this weekend in this QS 4000 event in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

KM.0 GOURMET – MADE IN PANTÍN

Today we want to highlight the local cooperative area, featuring proximity-based products made with great care, in a project promoted by the Provincial Council of A Coruña and showcased in this year’s local market through, among others, the A Fusquenlla cooperative.

As part of the event’s program, we wanted to support small brands and artisans in a local fair that you can find just past the entrance totem. Highlights include Ay Carmen’s preserves, with refreshing lemonade “made in Pantín,” along with jams made from strawberries, blueberries, tomato, and candied tomato. Nearby, you’ll also find grapefruit juice, granola, live artisanal craft demonstrations, and much more.

DISTINGUISHED GUESTS

Among today’s distinguished guests was a group of 25 people from Tempus, an association that fights against inequality in our region. They enjoyed a guided tour of the venue with various activities, following on from the cheerful and lively group from the ASCM Sociocultural Association of Ferrol, who visited us yesterday, in an initiative supported by the Department of Social Policy of the Xunta.

We would also like to thank another distinguished neighbor of Pantín (Valdoviño), Andrés Suárez, for his good humor and kindness.
