MORE THAN 150 WORLD-TOP SURFERS WILL COMPETE IN THE 35TH EDITION OF ABANCA PANTÍN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO

  • Galician surfers will compete from 9 to 11 to achieve a wildcard, a direct pass to the international test for the best four.
  • Lete Lasa highlights the Xunta’s commitment to basic sports linked to the natural space and the unique conditions of the coast for water sports.

Countdown to the most anticipated edition of the ABANCA PANTÍN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO 2022, which leaves behind the restrictions of the pandemic and celebrates its 35th anniversary with a special and expanded program.

More than 150 surfers from all over the world are already registered for a competition that starts next Saturday, July 9, and will run until the final series (16 and 17) and that combines the international circuit championship with a specific event for athletes of adapted surfing with a Galician championship for promising youngsters.

Surfers of the stature of Joan Durú (Bayona, 1989), recent World Champion in 2021 at the ISA World Surfing Games 2021 held in El Salvador with the French team, or the Portuguese Teresa Bonvalot (Cascais, 1999) will be in the factory of waves of Pantín, together with Adur Amatriain, winner in the men’s category last year.

It will be a luxury to be able to see the very young Tahitian Kauli Vaast, a benchmark in big wave surfing at just 20 years old, and his sister in the water, Aelan Vaast, who returns to Ferrolterra a few weeks after taking victory in Doniños in the Cabreiroá Junior Pro Ferrol, in addition to taking the prize for the best wave of the championship. It only remains that the forecast of the sun is with us, and the sea responds to offer an unrepeatable show in our region and, without a doubt, one of the most outstanding events of the Galician summer.

THE GALICIAN SURFERS WILL COMPETE FOR 4 WILDCARDS TO THE MAIN COMPETITION TO MEASURE THEMSELVES WITH THEIR IDOLS

In addition to being able to see top-level surfing from the hand of the best in the world, the 35th edition of the ABANCA PANTÍN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO opens the waves to Galician talent with the Galician championship. It is an open competition, from 16 years onwards with the term still open and in which about sixty athletes take part in the two categories.

The best four, that is, the first two classified -two girls and two boys-, will obtain a wildcard or direct invitation to the main competition where they will be able to mix and compete with their idols and references in world surfing, explains Román Díez, from the Federation Gallega de Surf, which now has more than 3,000 licenses.

Among the prominent names for this summer are those of Claudia Prieto, Lola Bermúdez, and Lucía Martínez, or those Juan and Martín Fernández or Iván Rodríguez.

The Galician competition will be from 9 to 11, coinciding with the inclusive and adapted surfing events in which more than 33 athletes with disabilities from the United States, Canada, Argentina, France, and Portugal take part.

From the General Secretariat for Galician Sports, José Ramón Lete Lasa highlights the Galician Government’s firm commitment to pamper sport from the base to the competition. A formula that the ABANCA PANTÍN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO combines perfectly by combining inclusive sport, and promotion of the base with a first-class international event that serves as a showcase for the Galician coast and its enormous potential for water sports. “This commitment to the sport is a commitment to a healthier Galicia, with a better quality of life, more egalitarian, inclusive, competitive, and better”.

It only remains that the forecast of the sun is with us and the sea responds to offer an unrepeatable show in our region and, without a doubt, one of the most outstanding events of the Galician summer. The ideal setting for a 35th anniversary.
