Carballo (A Coruña), September 27 – The sun returned to Razo beach on the fourth day of the international WSL (World Surf League) competition on the best day of waves and spectacle, with the rising tide providing impressive surfing in terms of quality and maneuvers.
The qualifying heats began at 8:15 AM with sunrise and continued uninterrupted until 6:00 PM, progressing in both categories: men’s and women’s.
Galician surfer Manuel Fernández, who had earned a direct pass with a wildcard on Tuesday, was eliminated today on the last wave in the final minute of the quarterfinals, much to the disappointment of the local fans.
Advancing to the quarterfinals in the men’s division are brothers Dylan and Connor Donegan, along with Jacobo Trigo and Xan Atxchoarena, who are the Spanish contenders for the European junior crown.
Rounding out the quarterfinals in this category are Paco Alonzo, Axel Domínguez, Matías Cahnoto, Uri Uziel, Salvador Vala, Nicolas Paulet, Ido Hagag (ISR), Leonardo Apreda, Joao Mendoza, Francisco Ordonhas, Michele Scoppa, and Ilay Bochan.
Among the women, five Spanish representatives made it through: Sol Borelli, Carla Morera, Kenia Carril, Ibone Gómez, and the current champion, Anette González Etxabarri.
Also advancing to the final rounds are the French surfers Aelaan Vaast, sister of the Olympic champion in Tahiti, Kauli Vaast, along with several compatriots such as Sarah Leiceaga, Hina María Conradi, Lilou Rumiel, Anais Blanchard, Zoe Jaeckin, Naia Monte, and Nahia Milhau, all from France. The Portuguese surfers Maria Salgado and Maria Dias complete the list.
The quarterfinals, semifinals, and grand final will take place tomorrow, Saturday, starting at 9:30 AM, with the award ceremony scheduled for 4:00 PM, featuring the mayor, Evencio Ferrero, the Director of Tourism of Galicia, Xosé Merelles, and the Vice President of the Provincial Council, Xosé Regueira.
VISIT FROM CPR ARTAI SCHOOL
This Friday, another 60 students from CPR Artai, from 1st and 3rd-year ESO, visited the event, gaining an introduction to the sport through an international competition taking place close to their school, involving a total of 187 boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 20.
With them, some of the best junior athletes in Europe had the opportunity to chat and take pictures, as well as try out skateboarding and participate in inclusive, equal, and active leisure activities promoted by Espazos Corresponsables, with the support of the Directorate General for Equality Promotion of the Xunta de Galicia, as a resource for work-life balance and to help connect the event with the local community.
