2024 ABANCA PANTIN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO & PSL OPEN”.
The 37th edition of the International Surfing Championship “ABANCA PANTIN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO” starts this year full of novelties. As it is already traditional, parallel to the celebration of the World Surf League (WSL) event, other championships of different nature will take place, such as the Galician Open or the Adapted Surfing Championship. The latter event, already a benchmark in the world of adapted sports, takes a qualitative leap forward by joining the Para Surf League (PSL) circuit, a worldwide championship originally designed to support and promote Para Surfing around the world and which currently aspires to incorporate this sport into the Paralympic Games.
The ABANCA PANTIN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO & PSL OPEN 2024″, which will be held from the 24th to the 25th of August, will serve not only to proclaim the winner of the event, but will also count towards crowning the Global Champion and the Continental Zone Champion.
The commitment to inclusivity is total, for this reason, the championship includes all nine divisions of Para Surfing established by the International Surfing Association (ISA):
Stand 1 (PS-S1): Any standing surfer with an upper limb amputation or comparable disability. This class also includes a surfer with reduced stature.
Stand 2 (PS-S2): Any standing surfer with a below-knee amputation or comparable disability.
Stand 3 (PS-S3): Any surfer who surfs standing with an above-knee amputation or comparable disability.
Prone 1 (PS-P1): Any athlete who surfs lying on the board and does NOT require help/assistance to paddle, catch the wave and get on the board.
Prone 2 (PS-P2): Any athlete who surfs lying on the board and DOES require assistance to paddle, catch the wave and get on the board.
Kneel (PS-K): Any surfer who surfs kneeling with an above-knee amputation, double below-knee amputation or comparable disability.
Sit/Waveski (PS-Sit): Any surfer who surfs sitting with REMO and does NOT require assistance.
Visual Impairment 1 (PS-VI1): Any surfer with a FULL vision impairment.
Visual Impairment 2 (PS-VI2): Any surfer with a PARTIAL vision impairment.
An “Open” division will also be created, for those athletes who enter but do not meet the qualification requirements of any of the above 9 divisions.
Between all these divisions, which will exist for both male and female categories, a total of 18,900 euros in prize money will be distributed, which makes it one of the competitions with the highest amount allocated worldwide and an important help when it comes to paying for travel and logistics.
Many names have already competed in this event, setting an example of limitless achievement: Corinne Oehen, Audrey Pascal, Dana Cummings, Paloma Oñate, Lou Mechiche, Álvaro Menéndez…
Adapted surfing thus consolidates its own space as a fully professional modality, making a commitment to all the values that should prevail in sport, such as equal opportunities for all athletes regardless of their causalities.
