THE FINALS
Fifth and final day of competition at the highest level in the 37th edition of the Abanca Pantin Classic Galicia Pro, the only WSL event in Spain, which started on Saturday morning shortly after 10:30 a.m. with the quarterfinals of the girls and which closed nine hours later, after 6:30 p.m. with the two finals: men’s and women’s.
The Pantín sea did not offer its most powerful version this afternoon with few, small and weak waves that did not allow them to develop their full potential, although they improved in quality as the finals approached.
For the young French surfer, this was her second championship in Galicia and it already served her to take the crown of the WSL event. “I am very happy to be here,” proclaimed the new champion of the Abanca Pantin Classic, supported by her family and by the French community that traveled to Valdoviño beach, where hundreds of people gathered on the slope of the beach to watch the final live.
Tya is the daughter of another renowned snow athlete -Caroline Beliard- and started surfing when she was just 2 years old. Despite her youth, Zebrowski was one of the great revelations of the championship with her display of talent by beating the German Noah Klapp in the final, who had been one of the strongest competitors in each heat since the beginning of the championship.
For his part, Afonso Antunes thanked his family for their support, as soon as he came out of the water in “a very significant victory for his career” against some of the best. “I still can’t believe I won.” A wave almost at the last moment and scored an 8, it helped him surpass Couzinet by 0.17 points and become the winner of the WSL QS.3000 test.
THE COMPETITION
Among the girls, two Portuguese women reached the semifinals: Teresa Bonvalot -Pantin champion in 2022- and Francisca Veselko, along with the German Noah Klapp and the very young Tya Zebrowski (Tahiti), who gave a great display of talent, patience and maturity to the to overcome the rounds of the competition against the much more veteran and seasoned athletes in international events.
Among the boys, the semi-finalists were the Portuguese Afonso Antunes – who beat Nicolas Paulet in his heat -, while Luan Nogues beat Hans Odriozola (16) and Jorgann Couzinet beat his compatriot Gatien Delahaye. The last two rounds of the quarterfinals were contested by the Spanish Sean Gunning who escaped the pass in the last second with the last wave of Charly Quivront, with a score from the judges highly questioned by the public.
