The best junior surfers, conquering the waves of the Costa da Morte

The best junior surfers in Galicia will have the opportunity to earn a direct pass to the main WSL competition, in the only stop in Spain on the European circuit.

The event presentation will take place on Thursday, September 21, at noon in the surf city of Razo.

Razo, A Coruña, September 15 – The Costa da Morte, which aspires to become a World Surfing Reserve with the Save The Waves Coalition, is the setting where the best current junior surfers will face off in the waters of Caión and Razo from September 20 to 24 at the CABREIROÁ JUNIOR PRO RAZO-CAIÓN 2023.

Close to 200 registered participants, a record number for a junior championship in the only junior event on the World Surf League (WSL) calendar, will offer excitement and all the emotion of competition with a magnificent wave forecast. Young surfers, both male and female, will test their skills in an inclusive event that promotes sports at the grassroots level. It’s the most important event of the annual calendar for the youngest surfers.

The championship kicks off on Wednesday, September 20 in Caión (A Laracha) with the Trials sponsored by Deporte Galego and the Galician Surf Federation. The top two standout athletes will receive a wildcard from the organization, providing a direct pass to the main competition, one for each category – male/female. Notable names like Daniela Alonso (Vigo), Lola Bermúdez (A Coruña), Manuel Fernández (A Coruña), and Iván Rodríguez (Vigo) will aim to repeat their recent success at the ABANCA PANTIN CLASSIC GALICIA PRO in Pantín, where they competed against some of the best surfers in the world like Maxime Huscenot or Teresa Bonvalot.

The competition will continue in the following days at Razo Beach, Carballo, with the WSL trials (JQS 1000) for juniors. There is anticipation to see how the Basque surfer Kai Odriozola, who recently won the World Qualifying Series (WQS) in Newquay, England, and is very close to joining the world Challengers, rides the waves. The presence of two French surfers, Noa Dupouy and Sam Piter, along with Markel Vizcarguenaga, and the Portuguese Francisco Ordonhas is also noteworthy.

In the women’s category, it’s worth highlighting the excellent form of the González-Etxabarri sisters, Janire and Anette, who will face strong competition from Aelan Vaast, a member of the renowned Tahitian surfers’ family, and Lilias Tebbai from Morocco, all of them in the highest ranks of the standings after competing in Torche, France.

THE OFFICIAL EVENT PRESENTATION WILL BE ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, AT NOON

On Thursday, September 21, at noon, the official on-site presentation of the competition will take place with Galician surfer Gony Zubizarreta as the master of ceremonies. Authorities and representatives from public institutions such as the Xunta de Galicia, Concello da Laracha, Concello de Carballo, Deputación da Coruña, Consellería de Emprego e Igualdade, and Turismo Galicia, as well as private sponsors Cabreiroá, Jael Xoieiros, Gadis, and Vithas, who once again make this event possible, are invited to attend.
